Like many others, we started as hobby wine makers and learned as we went along. We studied many of the classic texts, followed research and learned from others, inserting our own influence. We love what we make and it all starts in the vineyard. Quoting one of the loons, “we get the best fruit possible and try not to dork it up”.
We strive to crush our grapes as soon as possible after picking. We were picked late in the day one year, so we ended up crushing at 2:00 AM. Aunt Patti said we were crazier than a couple of loons. An oracle, that Aunt Patti, source of wise counsel!
An artist, and life long friend, was living by a lake in the early 1990’s and took to sketching on the newly invented Post It Notes. Two birds swam by, he made a sketch and promptly hid it from himself. It was rediscovered in 2010 and when he presented it to us, we got goosebumps. We love you long time, Duncan James Livingston!
We really do enjoy making wine, drinking wine, sharing wine with people and talking about wine (just can’t shut us up once we get started, though). Our wine making is enormously labor intensive, hence the notion of handmade wines. We hand sell because we want to know the people buying our wines and, if at all possible, spend time with them at the winery.
Our winery dog (dog came first, winery came later), Lucy, is a Bernese Mountain Dog and one of the sweetest creatures on earth. She has a fondness for sitting on peoples' feet to make herself convenient for petting. As such, she would like to see you at the winery as much as we would!
Loon Labs is our 'second' label. (not much room for one at a nano-winery!) The blends are everyday wines that are not intimidated by BBQ, pizza or spicy foods. A playful expression of the adventure in all of us and their diversity will surprise you. Let the adventure begin!
